Mahler arr Iain Farrington Symphony No. 4
Strauss arr Gowers Four Last Songs
In the final concert of this tenth festival, The Barnes Festival Orchestra perform two titans of the symphonic repertoire, but through the medium of chamber format. Iain Farrington’s tasteful arrangement of Mahler 4 guides us through the drama of this symphony - from pastoral scenes through devil-like dance as we move towards the heavenly song of the final movement.
Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs carry this theme of Lieder into the eternal. They tell of longing for spring, the drooping garden, the gradual descent into sleep, and, in Strauss’s concluding song, of the warm evening glow at the end of the day.
