Elégie — Rachmaninoff, A Heart in Exile

Lucy Parham piano
Alistair McGowan narrator
Tickets £25, £20
Alistair McGowan has been a key figure at many of the festivals over the last ten years and returns this year with one of Britain’s finest pianists, Lucy Parham, to narrate her ‘Composer Portrait’ of Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Though Rachmaninoff became an exile in 1917, Russia remained deeply rooted in his soul and his longing for his homeland imbues his music. The narrative, scripted by Lucy Parham from letters and diaries, follows Rachmaninoff from his youth in Russia through his exile and finally to California where he died. The programme includes many of his best-loved works for solo piano including a selection of Preludes, Etudes-Tableaux and Moments Musicaux, some of his own transcriptions and his haunting Elégie.
